When the summer sun is shining there is one thing that the mind craves; a cocktail. The great part about a cocktail is that there is not much complexity involved in getting the beverage prepared and even the simplest of kitchen ingredients can make for a wonderful and refreshing drink. However, it is equally true that the distinct flavour of some herbs offer a great value addition. So, here are the top 3 summer cocktail recipes we can all raise a glass to.
Traditional Gin and Tonic
- Gin 1.5 oz
- Tonic water
- Ice
- Lime peel
- Juniper berries 3
Take a large glass and fill it up with the gin and ice cubes. Just add in the washed juniper berries and put in a twist of lime peel. After this, top up with as much tonic water as you like and let the ingredients all mix for about half a minute. Enjoy this traditional British drink which never ceases to be surprisingly refreshing.
Steeped Margarita
- Tequila 350 mld
- Water 1 litre
- Limeade concentrate ½ teaspoon
- Orange flavoured liqueur 125 ml
- Whole lime 1, cut into wedges
Mix in tequila, limeade and the orange flavoured liqueur into the water. Pour this mix into a freezer-safe container, stir to mix and close the lid. Keep it in the freezer for about 24 hours to get a slushy liquid. Pour this into glasses, garnish with a wedge of lime and serve.
Bourbon Strawberry
- Bourbon 2 oz.
- Fresh strawberries 2, hulled and cut into quarters
- Honey syrup ½ oz.
- Ginger syrup ¾ oz.
- Fresh lemon juice ¾ oz.
- Rhubarb bitter 2 dashes
- Club soda
- Ice cubes
To prepare the honey syrup, mix in equal quantities of honey and water. Pour this into a shaker, add in the strawberries and muddle. Add in all other ingredients leaving out the club soda; shake after adding ice. Strain the liquid into a highball glass filled with ice. Pour in the club soda to top up and garnish with a sprig of mint and a few slices of fresh strawberry.
